The topic of preschool is a constant matter of debate among parents and child specialists. Different experts have different opinions about whether a child needs to go to preschool. The answer is a simple yes as well as no. Yes, because preschools play a major role in education and all round development of child and no because many kids that didn’t go to preschools or kindergartens still managed to do well in life. The choice comes down to individual parents. A good preschool can really make a valuable difference in a child’s life but the wrong preschool experience could potentially set a child back by creating a negative perception of school, learning, and socializing.

If you have decided to send your kid to a preschool you must look at what a preschool program has to offer. An ideal preschool builds the foundation of knowledge, culture, numbers etc. It also helps in developing child’s social and emotional skills. Preschool programs don’t work in a defined way. The course curriculum depends upon community to community and place to place. But at the same time, parents can achieve these objectives without the confines of a preschool program. They can create a learning environment at home and focus specifically to child’s education.

If your child has experience of daycare then he is less likely to require social environment of a preschool. If you have a joint family then child will develop social skills on his own. He will know the meaning of playing with others, sharing with others and other key social lessons. Parents can also think of creating a home preschool program for children. They can get such services from local libraries or online learning centers etc and create customized home curriculum for the child. Finally, it boils down to individual choice of parents and quality of preschool program in the neighborhood.

Usually, kids are not really interested in reading simply because their brain is not developed enough to understand alphabets and sentence structure etc. You can read fluently to a child only when he develops the grasping power. But reading is known to benefit children in many ways. The first and foremost benefit is improvement in the hearing skills of the child. It is recommended that after reading the text to the child ask him/her to repeat it. This will not only improve his hearing skills but also help him in learning correct pronunciation. Reading aloud to children is very important for toddlers or preschoolers. Both teachers as well as parents should do it regularly. It is important for developing linguistic abilities.

Reading to a child has direct effect on his pronunciation which is going to play a big role in his future. He tends to receive the words minutely. He will follow the way you or teachers read and pronounce the words. Reading something like poetries or nursery rhymes or stories etc not only interests child but also helps him in memorizing quickly and grasping the words efficiently. Besides, this is a great way to find out his intelligence and grasping power.

When you read aloud to children, they are able to pay more attention which in turn improves his concentration and focus. It is hard for children to remain interested in one thing for long so choose reading matter carefully. Stories and rhymes etc can do a fine job here. One more benefit of reading to child is introduction of new words. As child comes across new vocabularies, he starts interpreting the meaning. Later on, you can teach him how to use these new words in writing. Reading to children also helps in improving their communication skills.

It is important to create a learning environment at home. Though, you might have got your child enrolled at a playschool or preschool, but because children spend most of their time at home, you can encourage your child’s natural instincts by making your home learning environment. This will also prove crucial in making child interested in learning things on his own. Contrary to popular beliefs, children do most of their learning at home and not at schools. A child spends maximum time in his home so that leaves plenty of spare time for learning new and interesting things at home.

Children are curious by nature. They like to explore new things and learn at their own pace. It is not advisable to force child into a fixed schedule. Children tend to spend their time at home actively playing and using their imaginations, fighting, eating, watching and hearing adults interact, and even daydreaming. With few minor modifications and creativity, you can foster a great learning environment at home. Parents should strive to encourage creativity of the children. Provide them with resources such as an area in your house completely dedicated to painting or drawing. It is important to encourage artistic instincts of your kid. You should motivate him to play with building blocks or sketches or musical instrument. Instead of buying expensive kits, games, and learning equipment, arrange for smaller items and enjoy the creativity of your child.

Learning cannot take place in a crowded place. Provide some privacy or a quiet place to your child where he can go to read, listen to music, write in a journal, or just sit and look out the window daydreaming. Focus on what interests your child. You can share his enthusiasm for new things and guide him properly. If you child talks about solar system or stars or sun then gift him a telescope and teach him how to use it. These small steps will go a long way in making your home a learning environment.

It is not an easy task to nurture young kids. Toddlers and small kids are restless. They are on constant move. They require constant discipline and understanding. When it comes to the security of the kids in preschools or kindergarten, parents need to be on their toes. Little boys and girls are always prone to mishaps or unwarranted injuries and that’s why parents need to child-proof their house. Start with a thorough search of your house for anything that might be hazardous to your preschooler. Remove all the dangerous objects or keep them away from your child’s reach and sight. Remember that children tend to put objects inside their mouths so keep aside all objects that can make him choke.

Preschoolers must be kept away from all electrical objects. Power wire, remote control, batteries, plastics etc can prove to be dangerous. Consider obstructing path to power plugs so that toddlers cannot reach there. Kitchen has many potentially unsafe objects that can harm child. For instance, knife or forks etc should be kept on countertop and make them totally inaccessible to the child. Preschoolers can be intelligent though and can find a way to reach the shelf or racks. So put aside things like cling wrap, cutlery or other cooking instruments on counters and tables.

Preschoolers should be kept away from frying pans and pots. They should be carefully monitored if they are beside pool. Parents should always be vigilant. Children are vulnerable to outside dangers but a little foresight on parents’ part can help avoiding accidents. If you try to look at things from a preschooler perspective, it will be easy for you to think of proper housekeeping and safety measures. Toddlers have no idea about what is safe and what is risky and that’s why parents need to maintain constant vigil.

Imbibing reading skills in your child demands certain skills. Many parents express their inability to teach reading skills to their kids. But if you can read yourself then you can also teach your child. The first question that a parent needs to ask himself is whether child is ready to read? Usually, by the time a child attains the age of two, he/she is ready to read. But then, there are other factors also. Not every child is same so some may learn fast whereas some others take their own sweet time. It has been seen that some children have started developing an inclination towards reading as late as four or five years. As a parent you should observe your child keenly and check whether he flips through the pages or does he show any interest when you teach him letters. If your answer is yes then you can proceed to teach him reading.

First rule is to read aloud to him. Sit with him in a comfortable environment and read a story book to him. Keep your fingers on the word while you read. This will help child in associating the sound of the words with the printed words. If you read regularly, your child will also be interested in reading. You can also try to mix reading and writing. Try to mix reading, writing and seeing all together. This makes for a very effective strategy. Focus on teaching your child by emphasizing on the letter sounds more rather than on the letter names. Teach him one letter per day. Children take some time to learn so go slow.

Teaching kids to read should always be fun. Children should not feel any pressure. That’s why reading a story book is so very effective. Kids love stories plus these books have pictures which further piques their interests. You can also sing the letters and words to children. Do all these activities on a regular basis and soon your child will eventually learn how to read fluently.

Emergence of IT has completely changed the education scenario. IT has also invaded into the realms of preschools. Now a day, it has become a common sight to see preschoolers glued before their computers. Though, stuffs like crayons, clay and water-colors are still prevalent but computers are definitely making their presence felt in a big way. One can find several useful preschool software programs available in the market. Developed by child psychologists and child educational experts, these software are primarily creative and productive in nature. With the help of these programs, kids can indulge in creative activities like drawing and writing. Preschool games software are also available. These programs have popular cartoon and comic characters which help children in recognizing colors, using mouse, identifying shapes and letters etc. Children can also learn how to read and type with the help of preschool software.

Preschool software have been designed to improve better coordination and problem solving abilities and critical thinking skills of children. Because the games are entertaining in nature, children find them very enjoyable and spend long time on them. This way, they learn to explore and imagine things. Software have definitely come as a boon for preschool education system. However, it is important to choose right kind of software among a glut of programs available in the market.

Most of the preschool software can be quite expensive so you need to be judicious while buying them. Think of the purpose behind buying the software or what kind of learning will it provide or the educational content of the program or its true benefits etc. Get some of the quality educational programs but make sure they are not affecting children in a negative way. Be selective while using preschool software.
